Taiwan Whistles Up Regulators over XP’s End-of-Life
According to the China Post, Taiwan’s Consumers’ Foundation has complained to the island’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) about Microsoft pulling XP off the market, demanding that Microsoft be fined for pushing Vista instead, calling it an abuse of consumer rights. The Consumers’ Foundation, a private consumer watchdog, claims that 67% of local users want XP back on the market. The FTC is now reportedly investigating Microsoft for antitrust, an unusual situation to say the least. The seven-year-old operating system is still available under certain circumstances.

Google Invests in Energy’s ‘Killer App’
Google.com, Google’s philanthropic arm, intends to put upwards of $10 million in steam-producing geothermal energy that circulates water through hot rocks to lower the cost of electricity from renewable sources. Google thinks it could be the energy equivalent of a killer app. The money is going to AltaRock Energy Inc in Sausalito and Potter Drilling Inc in Redwood City. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allan’s VC arm Vulcan Capital, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and Advanced Technology Ventures are piling on the AltaRock deal. Google’s selfish motivation is the cost of its data centers.
